Display Image Quality Engineer (PhD)
At Meta Reality Labs, we are developing the future of Wearables and Mixed Reality products. As a Display Image Quality Engineer in our AR organization, you will be involved in the development and validation of novel display control systems to ensure high-quality visual experience across a vast range of environments and AR experiences. This work involves working closely with a highly interdisciplinary team of display, electrical sensor, software, silicon, and metrology engineers, as well as with scientists with backgrounds in optics, graphics and machine and human perception. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the intersection of display, optical, and system engineering and computer and human vision.
We are looking for candidates with expertise in combinations in the following areas: optical engineering, display and/or sensor pipeline engineering, perceptual metrology (e.g. color science), and image quality metrics.Display Image Quality Engineer (PhD) Responsibilities

We are looking for candidates with expertise in combinations in the following areas: optical engineering, display and/or sensor pipeline engineering, perceptual metrology (e.g. color science), and image quality metrics.Display Image Quality Engineer (PhD) Responsibilities
- Develop and execute sensor-to-display calibration processes (e.g. camera or ambient light sensor spatial and dynamic range characterization and correction, display color space, timing control etc) for augmented reality prototypes and products
- Work closely with research scientists to define precise requirements and refine systems and ensure with data that perceptual targets are achieved
- Work with cross-functional partners in research and product development to ensure calibration processes can transfer to production at scale (i.e. takt time optimization)
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a PhD in optics, electrical engineering, vision science, computational imaging, biomedical engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- Experience with spectro-radiometric and/or photometric measurement for calibrating sensor (e.g. camera, ambient light sensor) and display systems
- Experience working on the evaluation and engineering of display electronics and controllers
- Experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
- Knowledge of standard image quality metrics, and deriving new metrics for novel environments and/or display architectures
- Knowledge of the complete image processing pipeline, from capture through reproduction through professional experience, publications and/or academic training
- Industry experience conducting research investigating issues with displays and/or sensors that user experience with automatic display control
- 3+ years of experience in optics, computational imaging, biomedical engineering, or a related field with an emphasis on control systems and calibration.
- Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
- Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences
